"I have stood on a mountain of no's for one yes."
- B. Smith
Every year Monica and I attend "Southern Voices," a writer's conference in Hoover, AL, that features a number of well-known authors and a few who I haven't heard of. They discuss their creative processes, their approach to writing, the development of their characters, and the challenges inherent in their craft. While each one has a different take on these topics, the one huge obstacle they have all faced is rejection...and most of them have had loads of it. Still, they persevere.
Each year, I come away inspired. Hearing their stories of refusing to quit keeps me encouraged. One of my favorite cartoons shows a little boy who has a lemonade stand. The sign above the stand says, "Lemonade - $10,000 a glass" The caption reads, "I'm just looking for one good customer."
